THIN FUEL CELL ELECTRODES.

Abstract

Evaluation tests were conducted on existing thin electrodes so that they could serve as a standard comparison for the variation in material and manufacturing processes to be tried later. Data were collected which show that the features of metal and carbon electrodes can be combined in so-called ''fixed-zone'' electrodes manufactured by layering a porous-nickel backing with an active carbon material which contains the catalysts. Te available sintered-nickel plaques usable for electrode backing were physically characterized. Carbon materials suitable as electrode base ma-terial were screened in respect to their properties and preliminarily evaluated electrochemically. The electrode manufacturing techniques were critically examined to make them as reproducible as possible. Testing facilities were set up to permit the accumulation of screening daa. (Author)
