EVALUATION OF VASCO MAX 300 (18% NICKEL STEEL) BAR.

Abstract

Testing was conducted to determine the room temperature mechanical properties and heat treating characteristics of Vasco Max 300 (18% nickel steel) bar. Three unnotched tensile specimens and four notched tensile specimens were tested at room temperature. The specimens were heat-treated by solution-annealing 1 hour at 1500F followed by maraging for 3 hours at 900F. The average mechanical properties for the three unnotched tensile specimens are: ultimate tensile strength = 284Ksi; .2% offset yield strength = 276.4Ksi; elongation in 1 inch = 11% (one specimen only); reduction in area = 61%. The four notched specimens averaged 430.6Ksi notched tensile strength. A notched to unnotched tensile strength ratio of 1.52 was calculated for the alloy. (Author)
