INVESTIGATION OF ETCHING AND CEMENTING OF TEFLON.

Abstract

Lap shear and peel tests were conducted in order to compare Shell ''828'' - Versamid ''125'' adhesive with Bondmaster ''M-344'' cement. Similar specimens were tested to compare the bondability of an etched Teflon surface, produced by ''Tetra-Etch'' solution, with that of the etched Teflon surface supplied by the Teflon vendors. The specimens were made in the following combinations; vendor etch Teflon ''Tetra-Etch'' Teflon, and bare Teflon, cemented to clad aluminium and to themselves. One group of these specimens was cemented with each of the two adhesives. The ''Tetra-Etch'' treatment produced a bondable surface comparable to the vendor etch treatment. Specimens of etched Teflon bonded to clad aluminum with Bondmaster ''M-344'' cement had peel strengths of 10.1 pounds per in. compared to only 2.5 pounds per in. when bonded with Shell ''828'' - Versamid ''125'' adhesive. Specimens of etchedTeflon had average peel strengths of 9.2 lbs. per in. when bonded with Bondmaster ''M-344'' compared with average peel strengths of 8.7 lbs. per in. when bonded with Shell ''828'' Versamid ''125'' adhesive. Neither adhesive produced a satisfactory bond to bare Teflon. (Author)
