CARGO HANDLING RESEARCH A TEN-YEAR PROGRESS REPORT,
Abstract
A study of current developments in maritime cargo transportation is presented. While considerable resources are being expended in the improvement of ship design, port facilities, handling equipment and planning and control systems, improvements have not resulted in realization of potential benefits because they have not, in general, been conceived as elements of an integrated system comprising the marine port and its environs. Therefore, while the improvements might be best from the standpoint of the individual activity or operation, the question nevertheless remains as to whether the over-all marine port productivity has been benefited and to what degree. The purpose of this progress report is to provide in a single presentation an overview of the accomplishments of the program, as well as to serve as background and introduction to current and planned research in Maritime Cargo Handling and Transportation. The program has been directed toward: (1) development of basic understanding of the cargo handling process, from shipper to consignee; (2) determination of system interrelationships between the elements of maritime cargo handling systems; and (3) the development of analytical methodology with which the over-all cargo handling process can be studied and evaluated as a system.
