COMPRESSION TESTING OF X2020-T6 ALCLAD SHEET ELEMENTS.

Abstract

This test was conducted to determine the buckling and crippling characteristics of X2020-T6 Alclad aluminum sheet. Three built-up sheet metal specimens and twelve sheet metal elements of various configurations were tested in compression to determine the failing load and mode of failure. The built-up sheet metal specimens failed at a load of approximately 24,000 pounds and failed in a relatively brittle manner with the specimens breaking into numerous small pieces. The sheet metal elements failed at loads varying from 1920 to 6080 lbs depending on specimen configuration. All failures took place in typical crippling fashion. (Author)
