A PROPOSED DISCRIMINATION TEST FOR SENIOR NAVAL AVIATORS,

Abstract

A new test was formulated for the purpose of evaluating the naval aviators' ability to interpret speech in a background of high-intensity noise such as that found in an aircraft cockpit. The test consists of one hundred one-syllable ords recorded in 100db of aircraft noise at a signal-to-noise ratio of plus 15 db. Twenty-four Service Group I and three Service Group III naval aviators between ages of forty and fifty were tested using two forms of the test. Mean scores showed no difference between groups, despite differences in threshold acuity for pure tones. Re-test revealed an unexpected improvement due to practice. Te test is proposed as a realistic method for use in determining the senior aviators' qualification to perform in Service Group I. AUTHOR)
