ANALYSIS OF INTRAVENOUS FAT EMULSIONS AND COMPONENTS.

Abstract

A systematic procedure and some results are given for examination of Lipofundin and Intralipid samples by separation of the emulsions into aqueous and oil phases, followed by a combination of thin layer chromatography, gas liquid chromatography and other separation and test procedures to separate and partially identify the various components present. Te procedure also serves to quantitatively determine the water-soluble components and the triglyceride and lecithin (posphatidyl choline) components, and also the total of ''other components'' or impurities. the relative proportions of the latter are unexpectedly large. Small proportions of various sterols are present, these being identified and measured by gas chromatography. The possibility is discussed of a tendency toward inversion of an oilin-water emulsion to water-in-oil, as a consequence of the antagonism in lecithin-cholesterol systems and the possible inversion of the lecithin-cholesterol ratio upon infusion of an intravenous emulsion.
