ESTIMATION OF THE SCALE PARAMETER OF THE WEIBULL PROBABILITY DENSITY FUNCTION BY USE OF ONE ORDER STATISTIC,

Abstract

This paper discusses the use of order statistics in estimating the scale parameter of the Weibull probability density function. All necessary theory is developed concerning the estimating technique. It is assumed that the shape paramenter of the density function is known. Techniques are also presented for the establishment of confidence bounds about the parameter estimate. All necessary information required to apply the theory is presented in table form. Shape parameters of K = 0.5(0.5) 4.0(1.0)8.0 are considered as well as sample sizes of n = 1(1) 20(2)40. A single order statistic, the mth order statisti from a sample of size n, is required for estimation of the scale parameter and the placement of confidence bounds. (Author)
