ECHO SMOOTHING AND MODULATION. PART 1. GRAPHICAL ANALYSIS,

Abstract

This report contrasts the envelope smoothness of echoes produced when a square pulse and a parabolic pulse are reflected from a discrete series of point reflectors having identically distributed reflectivity. Analysis of several series of reflectors shows that the number of reflectors simulatenously irradiated determines which of the two pulse shapes will produce the smoother echo. The measure of smoothness is taken to be a plot of the percent of fluctuation in the power envelope of the echo when the pulse moves forward one reflector versus the cumulative probability of that percent of change.
