ATTENUATION OF WAVES IN TRAPEZOIDAL CHANNELS,

Abstract

The purpose of this model study was to obtain exploratory information relative to the wave attenuation in trapezoidal channels with and without a dredged center section, from which design criteria could be collected for use in planning the optimum type channel cross section for safe navigation. The attenuation was studied by the direct observation of the decrease in amplitude of the waves as they travelled along a model channel. The experiments were conducted in a 6.1 meters long, 1.13 meter wide and 15 cm. deep wave tank. Eight configurations of channel models were tested. It was found that the rate of the attenuation of wave height for a particular configuration of the trapezoidal channel appeared to be constant for all wave periods tested. It was also found that results from tests with waves with periods less than 0.5 sec. were not reliable because of the damping due to internal friction which become significant for the short waves.
