A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRANSITIVE PREFERENCE AND THE STRUCTURE OF THE COMMODITY SPACE,

Abstract

A transitive preference relation defined on some commodity space X is often included in the theory of consumer's choice. In this paper the transitivity of preference can be deduced from purely topological assumptions on certain sets, defined by preference, in the commodity space. The latter part of the paper is devoted to a technical theorem, and several examples designed to issustrate how the theorems presented break down when one or more of the assumptions under which they were proved are violated.
