STUDY OF DUCTILE COATINGS FOR THE OXIDATION PROTECTION OF COLUMBIUM AND MOLYBDENUM ALLOYS.

Abstract

Oxdation tests were conducted on platinum and platinum-10% rhodium alloy samples at 2000 and 2550 F with an air flow rate of 24 ipm. Tests were also conducted using air flow rates of 240 and 480 ipm at 2200 F on platinum samples. An extrapolatio of the data obtained indicates that 0.45 mils of platinum or 0.30 mils of platinum-10% rhodium alloy would protect base metal from oxidation for 100 hours at 3000 F in an air flow of 24 ipm, providing no interdiffusion of coating and base metal occurs. Platinum-coated molybdenum and niobium samples were prepared for oxidation tests. On the basis of large inconsistencies in oxidation life values for samples it was concluded that the method of preparation would require improvement. Boron nitride, alumina, rhenium, gold, and aluminum were selected as materials for diffusion barrier studies. (Author)
