INFRARED FIBER OPTICS INVESTIGATION.

Abstract

Work on the Research and Development of Infrared Fiber Optics is reported. The results of the experimental evaluation of fused fiber optics components from IR 442 glass are presented. These results are discussed in detail for fused fiber optics plates, imaging cones and single conical elements and, where applicable, conclusions drawn on their performance potential in optical systems. With the availability of a theory describing the skew ray performance of conical fibers and the results of edge response measurements, this evaluation will be complete. Edge response measuring equipment has been designed and is under construction. A concentric crucible has been built and used for the production of coated arsenic-sulphur glass fibers and these fibers are of sufficient quality for fabrication into fused components. (Author)
