EVALUATION OF DIFFERENTIAL DYE DIFFUSION AS AN AID TO DIAGNOSIS AND THERAPY IN BURN INJURY.
Abstract
A dye with a weak affinity to body proteins is being studied as an aid to different viable and necrotic tissue in burn injury. Bromphenol Blue, following intravenous injection, is rapidly distributed in body fluid compartments where the vascular tree is intact. An experimental animal immediately is intensely colored except in areas of necrosis. The dye is excreted rapidly from the body wherever there are normal fluid dynamics. It is removed more slowly in injury areas, with sluggish fluid dynamics. While it is being removed from viable tissue, it slowly diffuses into areas of necrosis where it remains permanently, providing a three dimensional demarcation between necrotic and viable tissue. It can be reinjected at intervals, making it possible to follow the changing nature of burn injury. Because Bromphenol Blue is labile, a direct relationship exists between its clearance from the tissues and intact fluid dynamics of the tissues. Since there is also a direct relationship between tissue viability and intact fluid dynamics, this dye has thus far demonstrated advantages over other methods. (Author)
