MULTIMODE POWER MEASUREMENTS.

Abstract

Further development of the AIL multimode power measurement technique was performed in the areas of (1) size reduction, (2) extension of frequency range, and (3) measurement of power absorbed by mismatched terminations. By reducing the transverse dimensions of the oversize waveguide from 3 to 1.5 times those of standard-size waveguide, the overall equipment length was reduced from 146 to 81 in. with a resulting decrease in accuracy from +1 to +3 db. The one portion of the system requiring substantial development to extend the measurement capability to 16 Gc was the microwave commutator. A broad-band 10 to 16 Gc commutator was fabricated and used in system tests. With the possibility of 38 modes propagating, power measurements were made at 15 Gc using the reduced size equipment with a maximum error of 2.2 db. A modification to the power measurement technique and equipment enables the measurement of power transmitted to mismatched terminations. With various mismatches, including a short circuit, the transmitted power was measured with a maximum error of 2.9 db. (Author)
