SUPERCONDUCTIVE EFFECTS IN THIN FILMS.

Abstract

The feasibility of performing electronic functions by making use of the phenomenon of electron tunneling between superconductors was the chief object of this project. The zero-voltage currents observed in experiments with low resistance tunneling crossings are one manifestation of electron-pair tunneling processes allowed in Josephson's theory of tunneling between superconductors. Rf oscillations observed near zerovoltage when the sample is placed in an appropriate rf jesonant circuit are attributed to the effect of the circuit loading during the transition period between Josephson tunneling and single particle tunneling which takes place when the small critical Josephson current is exceeded. This explanation supercedes the earlier attribution of the oscillations to negative-resistancelike behavior for which there is no basis in the theory of the effect. (Author)
