PEAK LIMITER AND HOLE PUNCHER NOISE SUPPRESSION CAPABILITIES FOR MINUTEMAN RECEIVERS,

Abstract

A project to ascertain the effectiveness of two types of noise suppression devics for use with digital communication receivers of the MINUTEMAN radio launch control system is described. The two types of devices are hole punchers and peak limiters. A series of tests established that both devices yield a significant improvement in system performance and that both provide approximately equal improvement. A set of graphs is presented which shows that, for a given bit error rate, the input noise-to-signal ratio may be as much as 16 db greater when the devices are used than when they are not. The results of the tests further showed that the peak limiter is capable of operating satisfactorily over a wide range of input signal levels, whereas the hole puncher cannot do this unless extra circuitry is added to it which will automatically increase its hole punching threshold when the signal level increases and vice versa. With this added feature, the hole puncher becomes many times more complex and costly than the peak limiter.In view of this, and since the hole puncher does not afford a significant improvement in system performance as compared to the peak limiter, it can be concluded that the peak limiter is the type of noise suppression device which should be used in the MINUTEMAN radio launch control system.
