MODELING STUDIES OF THE RESPONSE OF WEAPON FOUNDATIONS IN SOILS
Abstract
This report describes a study of the feasibility of using scaled models to predict the response of weapon foundations in soils. The conclusion is drawn that modeling techniques do offer a feasible means of predicting foundation response throughout a wide range of weapon and soil conditions. Experimental results obtained indicated that predictions accurate to within 5% are possible when tests are performed on carefully prepared soil specimens in which layers, surface effects, ect., are properly modeled and the soil at corresponding points has identical properties in model and prototype specimens. However, it was found that accuracy levels of approximately =50% should be expected if model tests are made in the conventional field test manner at the same location as the prototype tests.
