THE WELDING AND FORMING CHARACTERISTICS OF ' 'APMP' ' SHEET, GRADE 257.

Abstract

This report presents the results of a cursory investigation initiated for the purpose of determining the weldability and formability of ''APMP'' sheet, grade 257, for use in aircraft structures. The spot welds of the ''APMP'' sheet, grade 257, revealed some expulsion, porosity and cracking. This was apparently caused by the high oxide content of the ''APMP'' sheet, grade 257. All butt welded joints produced by the oxy-acetylene, oxy-hydrogen and inert gas shielded arc welding processes were unsatisfactory. The data indicate that ''APMP'' sheet, grade 257 does not compare favorably with 3S-1/2H aluminum sheet, as to dimpling, bending and ductility. (Author)
