HYDRODYNAMICS OF SHIP SLAMMING.
Abstract
Different approaches to the hydrodynamic impact problem of an arbitrary rigid body penetrating a fluid surface are presented. In the course of the work, a critical review of existing impact theories was undertaken, and a numerical method of impact pressure calculation was developed from formulations of the boundary conditions less restrictive than those usually employed and which is applicable to a wide class of forms. Results of this method are encouraging but almost prohibitively expensive to obtain. Simultaneously with the work on hydrodynamic impact, it was found possible to make contributions to the theory of ship motions in the form of a nonlinear formulation and a technique for solving the resulting equations. A review of work accomplished in this program is given by means of summaries of published papers and technical reports. Also presented are further discussions of the problem and some recommendations for future research. (Author)
