WEAPON SYSTEM 133A. W2SD-22 STRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT TEST CASE P515Y.07.

Abstract

Structural development test W2SD-22, case P515Y.07, was conducted to determine structural integrity of the M-57E1 motor case. To accomplish this, the case was subjected to the combined loading conditions of axial load, shear load, and bending moment applied under elevation surface temperature conditions. Loads experienced at time of failure were: (1) axial load - 49.9 kips; (2) shear load 6.1 kips; and (3) bending moment - 570.5 in.kips. The average surface temperature in the area of failure was 154 F. The mode of failure was a localized buckling of the foward skirt at 270 deg from target. Test results show the equivalent axial load at time of failure was 110.8 kips. Poisson's ratio and modulus of elasticity in the area of failure were 0.3385 and 11.0 x 10 to the 6th power psi, respectively. It was concluded that the Wing II design case is capable of meeting and exceeding present design requirements specified in Boeing document No. D2-3877-4. (Author)
