FERMENTATION OF CARBON 14-LABELED GLUCOSE BY CLOSTRIDIUM SPOROGENES.

Abstract

The in vivo effects on the toxicity of C.perfringens cultures by concomitant growth with C.sporogenes as expressed by virulence studies in mice were discussed. The minimum lethal dose as well as the LD50 were determined for pure cultures and sterile filtrates of the same two organisms. While the admixture of cultures decreased the toxicity of the C.perfringens strain, this same admixture produced a definite increase in necrosis at the site of injection. A strain of toxigenic C.sporogenes is described as well as a highly efficient medium for toxin production by C.perfringens. (Author)
