THE USE OF REFERENCE SIGNALS IN A VISUAL VIGILANCE TASK. I. REFERENCE SIGNALS CONTINUOUSLY DISPLAYED,

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not performance on a visual vigilance task is aided by continuously displaying, for the purpose of comparison, a reference signal adjacent to the signals were of two different levels of difficulty, which were determined in a psychophysical experiment undertaken prior to the main experiment. All 32 observers undertook each of four experimental conditions. The main conclusion was that performance in the type of vigilance task employed is not aided by continuously displaying a reference signal. (Author)
