SOME NEW DATA ON THE STRUCTURE OF CHONDRITES.
Abstract
The task of the present study was to compare the structure of metallic particles and some sulfides in chondrites which differ in structure and in metallic-iron content. The data presented relate to common chondrites and represent general results of the microscopic investigation of 60 chondrites from the meteoritic collection of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. Metallic iron, represented by nickel iron, and, in part, troilite, were studied in polished sections, used preliminarily to calculate the quantity of metal and sulfide, and were compared with observations in transparent sections made from the same chondrites. Then the polished surface was subjected to uniform etching with 5% or 2% nital. The polished sections were photographed under the microscope after etching and, in part, before etching. (Author)
