THE DEVELOPMENT OF A THERMONIC CONVERTER MODULE SUITABLE FOR LIQUID METAL HEATING.

Abstract

Basic module design and fabrication problems have been solved by the assembly and successful testing of a 3-converter module. Operation of this module proved the principle of enclosing several series-connected converters within a single vacuum envelope. The modular approach has been further demonstrated by the fabrication and testing of a 3-volt (10-converter) module. As a result of extensive bonding studies the use of expanding steel plugs to force the center tubing into a tight bond with the emitter has been selected. Life testing of one converter was concluded after 2403.5 hours. Another converter had completed more than 100 hours of a life test by the end of the report period. (Author)
