LINER FOR EXTRUSION BILLET CONTAINERS.

Abstract

Rene' 41 superalloy and stablized zirconia plasma arc coated extrusion liners were evaluated by extrusion 3 1/2 in. billets of SAE 4340 and TZM alloys, using rod extrusion dies of 16:1 and 40:1, and T-section dies. Billet temperatures were in the 2000 to 2100 F and 2900 to 3400 F ranges. Fixtures were designed and fabricated for an extrusion evaluation screening test of fiber metal reinforced ceramic composites. Tooling for rapid disassembly of solid ceramic liner-sleeve assemblies was fabricated and successfully tested. Two HTB-2 steel liner support sleeves explosively failed after shrink-fitting. Causes of failure were established, and corrective procedures instituted. Container design calculations were reworked to develop a routine suitable for application to all ceramic liner materials on order. (Author)
