RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TO IMPROVE THE RESOLUTION OF IATRON DIRECT VIEW STORAGE TUBES, VOLUME I.

Abstract

It was found that the field mesh did not work as theory predicted. It is not clear why this tube did not show improved resolution, except perhaps equation 1 does not apply in the case of a storage mesh. The gradient near the insulator surface is an extremely complicated and rapidly changing function. Perhaps this fact invalidates the expression for this application. Complex meshes were constructed with some difficulty. Certainly the construction technique described in this report can be improved to make construction easier. For example: the meshes could be electropolished before the insulator is evaporated onto the mesh. Electropolishing would eliminate many burrs and irregularities existing on the meshes and reduce the probability of an over-layer to mesh short. Although the results of testing the complex mesh Iatron did not yield the resolution improvement that was sought, it is believed that this type of solution will solve the Iatron image section resolution problem. More will be said on this subject in the next section. (Author)
