EXTENSION OF THE GAMMA - LOOP IN THE IRONSILICON SYSTEM BY HIGH PRESSURE,

Abstract

The effect of pressure on the extension of the gamma-loop in the iron-silicon system has been determined by means of metallographic studies, and hardness measurements performed on a series of high purity iron-silicon alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 at.-% silicon respectively. These measurements, performed at 42 kilobars and temperatures up to 1200 C indicate that the gamma - loop is expanded to about 10 at.-% silicon at 42 kilobars as opposed to a maximum extension of 4 at.-% silicon at one atmosphere. Comparison of the experimental results with thermodynamic predictions of the pressure shifts yield satisfactory results. (Author)
