COMBUSTIBLE IGNITION TUBES FOR THE PROPELLING CHARGE FOR THE 175MM GUN,

Abstract

A satisfactory process was developed for the manufacture of combustible ignition tubes from nitrocellulose paper for use in the M86 Propelling Charge for the 175mm Gun. Firing and roughhandling tests indicated the tube to be balistically and structurally satisfactory, with residue-free performance. It was recommended that nitrocellulose-paper combustible ignition tubes be incorporated into the standard propelling charge for the 175mm Gun, and that production facilities be established for the fabrication of tubular items from nitrocellulose paper.
