A CLOUD SURVEILLANCE RADAR UTILIZING A MASER AS A LOW-NOISE PREAMPLIFIER,

Abstract

This report describes the application of an X-band maser as a preamplifier for a weather radar. It was desirable to increase the sensitivity of the radar in order to observe greater cloud detail in addition to achieving greater range. The possible ways of accomplishing increased sensitivity include increasing transmitter power, optimizing bandwidth and signal proc essing to the information rate, shifting the operating frequency, and optimizing antenna design. The application of a low-noise preamplifier was chosen for this investigation. The results of this application are presented, and the system, consisting of a traveling wave ruby maser and the AN/MPS-34 radar, is described. (Author)
