SOME STRUCTURAL AND AERODYNAMIC CONSIDERATIONS OF VARIABLE SWEEP,

Abstract

A number of important considerations are discussed in connection with variable-sweep aeroplanes, particularly the question of where the pivot should be located. As well as the main advantages to be gained from matching sweep angle to speed, it also offers some less obvious possibilities of adjusting trim drag and stability, and a new method of lateral control at high sweep angles.
