SUPERPOWER MILLIMETER WAVE TUBE.

Abstract

Research was continued on a program aimed at generating large amounts of RF power in the region of 70-100 kilomegacycles. The immediate objective is the demonstration of Orthotron (a crossed-field microwave generator) operation at X-band with models which are scalable to millimeter wavelengths according to the power times frequency squared scaling law. The experimental results obtained with the inverted, 42vane prototype tube are presented. Although the tube apparently oscillated in a space-charge mode, it yielded voltage-current and voltage-magnetic field curves like those of a standard magnetron. These curves are shown and discussed. The design of a three-section array is given. Expressions for the gain of a single stage with reciprocal (stepped impedance) and non-reciprocal (circulator) coupling were derived in terms of the power output and Q of a prototype magnetron oscillator.
