LONG LIFE CLOSED LOOP MHD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT UNIT.

Abstract

The experience gained from the first test with the Closed Loop MHD Research Unit on October 11, 1963 is the basis for design modifications, which will be made before the next test of the complete machine. Features of the control panel layout and function are discussed, and additional calculations predicting loop performance are presented. A metallographic examination of an expendable portion of the tantalum structure was made after the full-scale test. The material shows no evidence of deterioration which can be attributed entirely to the dissolution of impurities from the working fluid. The design of the closed loop modified with ceramic-lined end returns is presented as a replacement for the existing structure when the tantalum ultimately fails. (Author)
