PROGRESS OF ULTRASONIC TESTING STUDIES,

Abstract

A program of evaluating the Soniscope ultrasonic test instrument as a means of performing reflection tests on rock in situ is being conducted. Samples of both homogenous and nonhomogenous materials are used in order to evaluate the effect of material composition on the propagation of ultrasonic signals, especially those signals reflected by any discontinuities existing in the test specimen. As a check of the sound propagation characteristics of each specimen used, ultrasonic signals are first transmitted through the test specimen and the sound velocity value in feet per second is determined for the specimen. The tests show that ultrasonic signals can be transmitted through all specimens used, both of homogenous and nonhomogenous material, with the Soniscope. However, usable signals reflected by discontinuities in the specimen are obtained only in the case of homogenous material. (Author)
