DATA PROCESSING OF WEIGHTS AND DIMENSIONS OF ARMY EQUIPMENT,

Abstract

The compilation of estimates of transportation requirements for the strategic deployment of Army forces has been hampered by incomplete and inaccurate data as well as time-consuming and inaccurate hand-processing methods. This paper describes a punched-card system that provides an easy method for maintaining up-to-date information on the weight and dimensions of large and/or heavy wheeled or tracked items of Army equipment and the kind and number of these items included in current Army tables of organization and equipment. The system developed includes a computer program for obtaining totals of the number of different line items, number of pieces of equipment, weight, length, area, and volume of each table of organization and equipment processed. Clearance factors for loading the equipment may be included or omitted from the totals of length, area, and volume at the user's option. Although designed primarily to meet the needs of studies of the transportation requirements of Army units, the information compiled is basic to other kinds of studies. (Author)
