HORIZONTAL LANDING TECHNIQUES, FOR HYPERSONIC VEHICLES

Abstract

The terminal approach and landing techniques presently being used for the X-15 hypersonic research vehicle are described. The development of these techniques and some flight test results are also discussed. The effects of wing loading, lift-drag ratio, visibility, handling qualities, speed brakes, and trim changes are analyzed as they pertain to low L/D landings of the X-15 and other hypersonic configurations. The use of an in-flight landing simulator to provide pilot traning and maintain pilot proficiency is emphasized.
