RESEARCH ON TECHNIQUES FOR LIGHT MODULATION DETECTION.

Abstract

Ths report describes work on heterodyne demodulation and direct demodulation of FM light. Results are given in the following areas: (1) experimental measurements on the optical ratio detector are described; (2) theoretical work resulting in two techniques for realizing any desired optical frequency characteristic is described. This work paves the way for a second generation of birefringent devices designed specifically to meet some system specification; (3) heterodyne and homodyne techniques for the demodulation of AM and FM microwave-modulation light are demonstrated; and (4) an AFC local oscillator using single-sideband suppressedcarrier modulation to control its frequency is investigated for use in an optical heterodyne receiver.
