AN ANALYTIC FORMULATION OF EQUATIONS OF STATE,

Abstract

A general equation of state is presented that provides a suitable description of the thermodynamic behavior of metals over a very wide range of temperature and compression. The thermodynamic dependence of pressure and specific internal energy upon temperature and compression is described by equations having coefficients that can be related to measured or calculated physical variables. This makes such a formula tion useful in assaying the effect of the parametric variation of the equation of state on hydrodynamic calculations. A description of the physical basis of the terms in the equation of state is given. The calculation of the specific entropy is reviewed and a method of calculation of Hugonoit points is presented. A summary of the program that has been written for machine calculation of the equation of state is given, along with the appropriate input instructions. (Author)
