EXPLORATION OF THE VAPOR PHASE ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRA OF THE HORMONES FROM THE ADRENAL AND RELATED SUBSTANCES,

Abstract

The absorption spectra for certain steroid and catechol derivatives in the range from 185-300 mu. in the vapor state is compared to the absorption spectra of these compounds observed in solvents. It is pointed out that better resolution and higher sensitivity is observed in the vapor state. Elevated temperatures are used to vaporize these compounds and a practical cuvette and heating means are described for this purpose. At elevated temperatures certain bands visible at low temperatures are wiped out in the range of approximately 230 mu. However, other bands of high degree of absorptivity appear at from 185210 mu. The spectra of derivatives of desoxy corticosterone, cortisone, estradiol, estrone, veratrole and vanillin are explored in this study. (Author)
