X-RAY ABSORPTION SPECTRA OF CU-NI ALLOYS,

Abstract

Copper and Nickel K absorption spectra have been measured in the pure metals and in four alloys respectively containing 17.2, 26.0, 43.3, and 65.6 at. % copper. Variations in the absorptionedge fine structure of both metals were observed in the nickel-rich solid solutions. These variations are interpreted to indicate progressive sharing of copper 4s electrons with nickel, in accord with the collective-electron model. The specific interpretation of the x-ray spectra, however, requires the consideration of atomic electron configurations as they exist in the crystal field of each alloy. It is also shown that this interpretation can be applied to explain the x-ray emission spectra observed by others. (Author)
