MEASUREMENT OF LAMINAR HEAT TRANSFER RATES OVER A TWO DIMENSIONAL BACKWARD FACING STEP IN A SHOCK TUBE,

Abstract

Heat transfer rats are measured over a two dimensional backward facing step in a laminar supersonic flow in the shock tube. The shock Mach numbers range between 4 and 10, the cor responding flow Mach numbers are approximately 1.5 to 2.5 and the Reynolds numbers per cm. range between 2x10 to the third power to 2x10 to the fifth power. High heat transfer rates are measured in the reattachment zone. The heat transfer rate there is found to increase rapidly with increasing Reynolds numbers. The total heat transfer rate to the separated region is thus greater than that for the attached flat plate laminar case for Re sub L greater than 2x10 to the fourth power. (Author)
