COLLAPSE, BUCKLING AND POST FAILURE OF CYLINDRICAL SHELLS

Abstract

It is demonstrated how simple existing theories can predict whether a shell will fail by buckling or form a collapse hinge and then fail by this collapse mechanism. It is also shown how work-energy analysis can predict the post failure plastic deflections of the shell once the mode of failure is known. Some comparisons with experimental results are given.
