NEODYMIUM LASER GLASS IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM.

Abstract

Investigation of the influence of various glass constituents on laser properties continued. A systematic investigation confirmed that lifetime varies inversely with Na2O concentration and directly with K2O, Rb2O and Cs2O concentrations. A new laser cavity was constructed for the comparison of thresholds of laser rods made from small experimental glass melts. A system was set up for making a direct experimental determination of the quantum efficiency of the fluorescence process to check the calculated values. Measurement was made on a Ba crown glass containing 2 wt.% Nd2O3. A program is underway to survey existing glasses and/or to design new ones which meet this requirement. (Author)
