THE PREPARATION OF RARE EARTH-MANGANESE-MERCURY ALLOYS,

Abstract

A method is described which allows by means of mercury to prepare RE-Manganese alloys, which are in an equilibrium state at 300 to 500 C. The process consists of 4 steps, namely (1) preparation of RE-amalgams by solving the metal in mercury at 450 C, (2) preparation of Manganeseamalgam by electrolysis, (3) reaction between RE-metal, Manganese and mercury, and (4) evaporation of the mercury. The process has been used for the preparation of Samarium- or GadoliniumManganese alloys, but it is applicable to all RE-metals and numerous other metals besides manganese. (Author)
