FEAR OF FAILURE AND THE ACHIEVEMENT SITUATION,
Abstract
This report has described the development of the HosP scoring system for use with TAT stories written to pictures selected for their failure cue value. On the basis of the work presented here it has been possible to frame a program of research directed to the study of motivation, situation effects on aspiration, and further analysis of the determinants of the fantasy scores. Further study of the scoring system is being conducted, and the first test-retest reliability coefficient (rho) is +.55 over an eight month period for a population of 10th grade males. It is likely that some modification of scoring procedures remains to be done, but we feel that the HosP has now been shown to have essentially the same working characteristics of previous systems of this type, and with proper experimental controls can be used for research into the complexities of achievement-fear of failure relationships.
