SELECTION OF STEELS FOR HEAVY-SECTION SHIP PLATE.

Abstract

In the design and construction of ships of large tonnages, one of the most pressing problems is the selection of hull material thatwill provide a suitable combination of strength, weldability, and resistance to brittle fracture. The Ship Steel Committee initiated Project SR-162 at Lehigh University to develop information which would enable the selection of the optimum composition and heat treatment of ship steel for use in heavy sections.
