HELICOPTER TRUE AIRSPEED SYSTEM MODEL 568T1.
Abstract
A description is given of the Model 568T1 helicopter airspeed system. Also included are the theory of operation, general installation instructions, and alignment procedure for the airspeed system. Five Model 568T1 helicopter airspeed systems, designed for operational use, are being supplied for flight evaluation. The airspeed system is substantially electrical and is based, in principle, on the continuous measure ment of the variation in a rotor blade tip speed relative to the surrounding air. The variation in blade tip speed is measured and utilized to simultaneously present true airspeed on two airspeed indicators - one indicating true airspeed along the longitudinal axis of the helicopter, the other indicating true airspeed along the lateral axis of the helicopter. The systems are designed to supersede a previous instrument whose flight testing, on a type XHO3S-2 helicopter, substantiated the basic theory. Each one of the five Model 568T1 airspeed systems is mechanically designed and electrically adjusted for use on a specific type of helicopter; type HSS-1, HSS-2, HR2S, HU2K, or HUP3. The five Model 568T1 airspeed systems were laboratory tested. Flight evaluation of the systems should show that they are suited for operational use. (Author)
