RADIATIVE TRANSFER IN FINITE HOMOGENEOUS ATMOSPHERES WITH ANISOTROPIC SCATTERING II. THE UNIQUENESS PROBLEM FOR CHANDRASEKHAR'S PSI AND PHI EQUATIONS,

Abstract

A study is made of the existence and uniqueness problems for Chandrasekhar's psi and phi equations for radiative transfer in homogeneous atmospheres with anisotropic scattering. It is shown that for many phase functions these nonlinear equations have one-parameter families of solutions. It is shown also that the unique solution which corresponds to the solution of the radiative-transfer problem must satisfy certain linear constraints in addition to Chandrasekhar's nonlinear equations.
