Investigation of the Para-Ortho Shift of Hydrogen

Abstract

Investigations of the low-temperature, heterogeneous catalysis of the para-ortho shift of hydrogen for the recovery of the endothermic heat of conversion as low-temperature refrigeration are reported. The research program included: studies of the effects of catalyst activation temperature, particle size, and chamber diameter on conversion activity; adsorption studies; the determination of separation factors of advanced catalysts; and preliminary work to determine the magnetic properties of advanced catalysts. An extensive catalyst development program resulted in improved catalyst systems for the conversion. The most advanced catalyst shows an activity 10.5 times more effective, on a weight basis, than hydrous ferric oxide gel which is the best commercial catalyst available for the conversion.
