SPECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF NON-METALS IN THE VACUUM ULTRAVIOLET BY MEANS OF A HOLLOW CATHODE LIGHT SOURCE.

Abstract

The research object has the scope to ascertain the feasibility of a spectrochemical analysis of non metals in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) utilizing the principle of the hollow cathode light source. An extended survey of the already performed work in this direction showed that very few experimental material was available, but that the theoretical considerations, indicating as very probable a better sensitivity of the spectrochemical analysis, at trace level, utilizing the principle of the hollow cathode light source could be considered as experimentally confirmed. Further theoretical considerations showed that the most sensitive lines of the non metallic elements should be the resonance lines lying in the VUV region of the spectrum, so that a particular construction of this kind of light source hadto be realized, capable to produce the desired spectrum in the desired spectral region and capable to be connected by means of an air free light path with a suitable vacuum spectrograph.
